Sustainable barn for cows and farmer

October 2010 – A magnificent cattle barn has been built for a dairy farm in Aldtsjerk in Friesland. The new barn complies with the requirements of the “Sustainable Livestock Farming Yardstick” that takes into account the cows, the farmer and the environment. Verzinkerij Wolvega hot-dip galvanised the steel structure for the new barn. The small parts were hot-dip galvanised by Centrizink Wolvega.

The construction of the barn took into account the well-being of the cows, efficiency for the farmer and sustainability for the environment. In Aldtsjerk, the cows spend as much time as possible in the fields but, when inside, they are free to move around the new barn and eat at will. With all the livestock under a single roof, the farmer can keep walking to a minimum. The roof of the new barn has been insulated so that it is also nice and cool in the summer. The high roof provides extra ventilation and excess heat is re-used if possible. The complete barn is lit by low-energy lamps that are turned on only when somebody goes into the barn. There is night lighting to prevent light pollution.

Constructie- en Installatiebedrijf K. Stok & Zn. from St. Annaparochie supplied and assembled the steel structure for the barn. Verzinkerij Wolvega galvanised the structure and Centrizink Wolvega hot-dip galvanised the small parts. So the cows and the farmer can rest assured that they have a well-finished and, above all, long-lasting barn.
